“PARLIAMENT The price of cars in Malaysia may not go any lower if the government removes the various duties imposed on imported automobiles, said International Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Jacob Dungau Sagan.
He said there are various factors that are outside of the government's control in determining the price of imported cars, such as component prices and foreign exchange rates.
“Reduction of duties will not necessarily bring down the price of cars, because the price is set by the companies based on the market,” he said when replying to a question from Chong Chieng Jen (DAP-Bandar Kuching).
Jacob (right) noted that while the government has agreed to completely remove or greatly reduce in stages the import and excise duties on imported cars in various free trade agreements (FTA) with Asean and Asian countries, it will still retain the duties on all imported vehicles for now.
“In accordance with the National Automotive Policy unveiled in 2009, the government has decided to maintain the import and excise duties. This will help the government overcome the negative impact on its income due to reduction of these duties,” he said.
The deputy minister's answer however did not satisfy Chong (left), who questioned the government's motives in retaining the import and excise duties that force inflated prices of foreign vehicles to protect local car makers.
Taking the example of the Toyota Vios, he said the Japanese car is priced between RM70,000 to RM90,000 in Malaysia, at least RM20,000 more expensive than in Thailand (from RM50,000 to RM70,000) and in China (RM45,000 to RM60,000).
“We also have to pay such a high price for local cars. In China, the locally-made Chery QQ3 is priced from RM19,000 to RM23,000 but here for a Perodua Viva we have to pay RM38,000.
iv. Komen sesetengah para pembaca Malaysiakini
Rolls-Royce Please cut the craps MITI. Just remove the car APs, equalise the tax between locally made cars and imported car, revise, review or remove all toll roads, IPPS, unnecessary APs from rice, sugar to flour and leave the rest to us. What do you know Deputy Minister of MITI? I don’t even know you before today. Why are you answering this question; Why not the other deputy minister in charge of juicy car APs? Don’t be stupid okay.

Dr Zafar Shah If the Excise duty = 300 to 350 percent (of the vehicle's base price) So the selling price= 300 to 450 % ++ The price of cars in Malaysia may not go any lower if the government removes the various duties imposed on imported automobiles ??? We need to check whether this guy has any knowledge of Maths or economy. Is he passed the UPSR exam ? Was he chosen to this position just because of family ties or political affiliation only?

Albert Car prices cannot & will not be reduced mainly due to Mahathir's expensive & egocentric Proton project. With its high investment cost & our low population base (economy of scale), no right thinking & sane individual will ever consider Proton as viable. Without any protection, Proton is a white elephant and would have collapse long ago in a free market economy. It has caused untold misery to the masses through "artifically inflated" car prices for the past 25 years. The rakyat have reduced purchasing power due to high monthly installments over long repayment periods (e.g. 9 years), resulting in lower standard of living. But the opportunists (esp UMNO Malays & their cronies) capitalize on this protection through allocation of AP Permits giving them high & quick profits, with minimal efforts as compared with genuine businesses. Sometimes if you think about it, Mahathir has caused massive, untold damages to the country & the rakyat during his 23 years as PM.

Anonymous If International Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Jacob Dungau Sagan says that the government cannot reduce the prices of car when the various duties imposed are removed, it just show the world what kind of stupid leaders we have. Common sense will tell you that when the duties are removed, the net selling price of the car would come down in accordance with the amount of duties removed. If the car sellers still sells it at the pre-removal price, then it is profiteering. Then the government can take action. If a restaurant owner sells plain water for RM10, the government can take action, why in the case of the car sellers they can't. Is it they can't or they won't. If he says he can't, then step aside. It just shows the government is impotent when dealing with big business.

d) Perhatikan solekan bahasanya oleh sesetengah pembaca. Ternyata rakyat yang didahului tersangatlah gembira, adanya.
Lalu, soalan kita pula, kira-kira begini:
Rakyat mana yang kamu ― terus-terusan bohongi?
Sampai bila rakyat ini, mahu kamu bohongi?
Mana lagi ― aksi lakonmu ― boleh kami percayai?
Rakyat mana yang kamu dahului?
Apanamanya yang kamu dahului?
Aduhai, muflis kerana hutang belajar...
