Mereka pun terus memintal jerat-jerat judi

"Dear Kassim

Yesterday, I asked my daughter about this recent issue of legalized gambling. Her answer was a straight “no ". She told me that a young college student had killed himself by jumping from the top floor of xx, Subang Jaya two weeks ago because of losing too much money in the internet gambling. This view was not only from her but also shared by her group of friends.

As rightfully pointed out by you, many Chinese do play cards and Mahjong games within their family members and close friends during the Chinese New Year and other social gatherings. The games involve money to give some excitements. But it is very clear in the minds of most of them that they are playing for fun and excitement and not for wanting to win big money from their own family members and close friends. However, playing these games involving money is still regarded as “gambling ".

You are perfectly right; care must be taken not to allow BN to turn this Pakatan campaign against the legalized gambling into a campaign of Pakatan wanting to ban all gambling. This will scare off the Chinese community that they are going to lose the freedom of having fun in playing card, and Mahjong games.

It is well understood in the Chinese community that a person will ruin his life once he becomes a gambler, or alcoholic (of course now the drug addicted is another one). It seems quite puzzling to many, why then we expose our children to gambling and alcohol knowing the dangers behind them! I think the long influence of Confucius philosophy on moderation has its impact on the Chinese thinking. Little gambling is for fun, but too much gambling ruin your life. Little alcohol drinking is for fun and health, but too much drinking ruin your life.

Best regards
A friend"
