Reforms possible only if Umno wins GE, says Najib

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 28 — The government’s political and economic reform plans can only take place if Umno delivers a solid win in the upcoming national polls, Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today.

Calling it a small challenge for Barisan Nasional’s (BN) biggest component party, the prime minister said Umno needed to work together with its partners to deliver results in order to be re-elected in the general election.

“We have to cross the bridge of the general election, it is very important to be re-elected for us to deliver real transformation, we need to get support from the people,” he said in his speech at an international forum organised by Umno here.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 28 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today praised the government for listening to the concerns of Malaysians, dismissing chances of a political uprising any time soon.

“I don’t see how the Arab Spring can spread to us. If we don’t take care of the people then of course they will rebel.

“But we have worked hard to create opportunities for the people such as giving land, industrialisation, job opportunities,” he told reporters here.

Commenting on the government’s tabling of the Peaceful Assembly Bill, Dr Mahathir said it proved the government was quick to adjust and listen to public concerns.

“I think this government is listening to the people very quickly; in my time, I don’t respond at all.

“You can interpret it as giving in or you can interpret it as being sensitive,” he added.

Selayang pandang

Adakah dua petikan di atas itu ‘berita’ atau apakah ia sekadar lawak jenaka yang berlegar di sekitar kedai-kedai kopi Titi Gajah dan Kuala Pahang?

Jika yang dikatakan mantan dan pewarisnya (yang sekian lama bersedap-sedap dengan kelazatan kuasa) itu adalah ‘berita’, kepada siapakah agaknya ‘berita’ ini mau dihalakan?  

Apakah ini skrip yang terpacul dari otak yang sekian lama dan terlalu lama berlazat-lazat dengan kuasa?

Mereka ini ― Sang Penguasa Kelas ini ― telah lama sedar:  Rakyat terbanyak negara mereka masih lagi merayau-rayau dari satu gua batu ke gua batu yang lain.
